What is the Ghost Festival called? There are so many names for the Chinese Ghost Festival.

What is Ghost Festival also called? As the name suggests, festivals related to ghosts or festivals to worship ghosts are called Ghost Festivals. In China, there is not just one Ghost Festival, and Ghost Festivals at different times are called differently. Next, let’s take a closer look at it.

What is the Ghost Festival also called?

Ghost Festival

The fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month every year is the traditional Chinese festival "Zhongyuan Festival", also known as "Ghost Festival" or "Mid-July Festival". In traditional folk beliefs, the seventh month of the lunar calendar is mysterious and dark. The gates of hell are wide open, and all ghosts come down from the netherworld to the human world to visit relatives, friends, and descendants, or to seek offerings. They do not return until the end of July when the gates of hell are closed. As it is a taboo, people seldom choose to hold festive ceremonies such as weddings, house moving or opening in July. The peak of this "Ghost Month" is undoubtedly the "Mid-July" also known as the "Zhongyuan Festival".

Qingming Festival

April 4th, 5th or 6th of every year is Qingming Festival in my country. Qingming Festival is also known as the "Ghost Festival". The difference between it and the Zhongyuan Festival is that the objects of worship are different. The deceased people who are commemorated during the Qingming Festival are their ancestors and relatives, while the Zhongyuan Festival is mainly for commemorating wandering ghosts. Paper is burned by the river, river lanterns are released, etc., to help these deceased souls who have no one to commemorate them to be reborn. Qingming Festival is one of China's important traditional festivals. It is not only a festival for people to pay homage to their ancestors and remember the martyrs, but also a bond for the Chinese nation to trace their roots.

Ancestor Worship Festival

The first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar every year is China's "Ancestor Worship Festival", which is known as one of the three major "Ghost Festivals" of the year along with Qingming Festival and Zhongyuan Festival. In order to prevent their ancestors from suffering from the cold in the underworld, people burn five-colored paper on this day to send them warm clothes, and also to bring warmth to the wandering ghosts, so this day is also called "Cold Clothes Festival." At the same time, this day also marks the arrival of severe winter, so it is also the day for parents, lovers, and others to send warm clothes to those they care about.
