Among the four famous Buddhist mountains in my country, Mount Putuo is the only Buddhist resort located on the sea. The beautiful natural scenery is integrated with the long-standing Buddhist culture, making it a world-famous Buddhist kingdom on the sea and sky. So, here is the guide to worshiping Buddha in Mount Putuo and the etiquette of worshiping Buddha in Mount Putuo. Guide to worshipping Buddha at Mount Putuo —— Take the bus to Huiji Temple first: The Etiquette of Worshipping Buddha at Mount Putuo1. Burn incense Going to a temple to buy incense is called "qing". You have to buy the incense yourself, and cannot have others pay for it on your behalf. It is appropriate to buy three incense sticks. 2. Entering the Temple and the Hall When entering a temple or a hall, you must go through the side door, not the main door; men should step over the threshold with their left legs and women with their right legs, and avoid stepping on the threshold or pointing at Buddha statues with your fingers. 3. Pilgrimage There are many Bodhisattvas in the temple, and you can worship them one by one. If time does not permit, you only need to burn incense in front of the main hall and bow three times to the others with your hands together. 4. Light incense Go to a dedicated incense-lighting area to light the incense. Do not take fire from the incense burner, and do not use a lighter to light it. Light incense with the left hand because Buddhism believes that the left hand is the cleanest. After lighting the incense, point the incense head upwards and use your right hand to gently fan out the fire (do not blow it out with your mouth). Then use your right hand to insert the incense into the incense burner. 5. Burning Incense 1. Face the main hall door, hold the incense sticks to the height of your eyebrows with both hands, press the tail end of the incense sticks with your thumbs, and point the tail end of the incense stick to your forehead. Point the tip of the incense at the Buddha statue, close your eyes, make a wish, and then bow three times. Then turn right, face east, raise the incense and bow three times, then face south and north in the same way; 2. After worshipping, you should use your left hand to take one branch and put it in the middle first, offering it to all the Buddhas in the ten directions; then use your right hand to take the second branch and put it on the right side, offering it to all the Dharmas in the ten directions; then use your left hand to take the third branch and put it on the left side, offering it to all the monks in the ten directions. Insert three sticks in a row, then bow to the Buddha three times. If the incense is too strong to be inserted directly into the incense burner, just use your left hand to throw the incense directly into the burner. 6. Make a Wish Usually you should remember to tell the Buddha your name, where you live, what you want to ask for, and where you want to return the wish after it is accomplished. Don’t make wishes casually. Come back and fulfill them after your wishes come true. 7. Worship Buddha 1. Male pilgrims should kneel on the cushion on the left, while female pilgrims should kneel on the cushion on the right. The cushion in the middle is for the abbot and should not be stepped over. 2. When worshipping Buddha, you should first worship the main Buddha in the middle, and then worship the other Buddha statues in a clockwise direction. 3. When you worship the Buddha, you should face the Buddha statue and recite the name of the Buddha. Then report your name and address, and then bow down with your palms facing up (palms facing down is for worshiping ancestors), indicating receiving the Buddha's feet. Repeat this three times. If you don’t know which Buddha or Bodhisattva is in front of you, just chant “Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva” in Putuo Mountain. 4. After bowing, support your body with your right hand, turn right and leave. 5. Hats, gloves and other items must be taken off and put away when worshiping Buddha. They should not be placed on the Buddhist table or desk. 8. Meeting the Monk The common way of greeting when meeting a monk is to put your hands together and bow your head slightly, or put one hand upright in front of your chest with your head slightly lowered. Avoid inappropriate etiquette such as shaking hands, hugging, and touching the monk's head. IX. Others 1. If you go to Mount Putuo, you usually have to go to Mount Luojia. Going to Mount Putuo without going to Mount Luojia is like burning only half an incense stick, as Mount Putuo is the place where Guanyin Bodhisattva practiced and attained enlightenment. 2. If you want to have a child, the husband and wife should go together. 10. Before entering the mountain When entering the mountains to worship Buddha, it is best to take a bath first and not sleep in the same room for three days. However, the Buddhist teachings should always be accommodating to sentient beings, and their key points should be harmony, understanding, and convenience. Do not let the many taboos discourage those who hear the Buddhist teachings for the first time. |
