Why do we eat dumplings during the Xiaonian Festival? The origin of eating dumplings will tell you the answer

We eat dumplings during every festival, so why do we eat dumplings during the Little New Year? For those who are interested, let’s learn more about it together.

Why do we eat dumplings during the Chinese New Year?

As the saying goes: "Send off dumplings with noodles facing the wind." In the north, the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month is called "Little Year", which means the end of the year. In the south, the Little New Year is usually celebrated on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. But whether in the north or the south, Xiaonian is a day to worship the Kitchen God and eat dumplings. The purpose of eating dumplings is to see the Kitchen God off. When offering sacrifices to the Kitchen God, the dumplings should be placed upright on the altar. Moreover, Xiaonian is regarded as the beginning of the Chinese New Year, and its level of grandness is almost the same as that of the Spring Festival. Therefore, on this day, everyone has to eat dumplings, the staple food.

The Origin of Eating Dumplings on Xiaonian Festival

The original name of dumplings was "jiao'er". Legend has it that they were first invented by Zhang Zhongjing, the medical saint of my country. It probably tells the story of people eating dumplings from the winter solstice to New Year's Eve to resist typhoid fever and cure frozen ears. This is the story of "Quhan Jiao'er Soup". Therefore, eating dumplings on the Little New Year is also to resist the cold winter. Besides, dumplings are so delicious that there is a folk saying that "nothing tastes better than dumplings".
