Why do we set off firecrackers during Chinese New Year?

Generally speaking, setting off firecrackers can create a festive atmosphere. It is a kind of entertainment activity during festivals. It can enhance the festive atmosphere and mobilize people's positive emotions. The red color on the ground after setting off firecrackers represents joy, happiness and auspiciousness. So whether it is Chinese New Year or other festivals, we will set off firecrackers to celebrate. So why do we set off firecrackers during the Chinese New Year? We have to trace this back to the origin of firecrackers, which is the legend about the Chinese New Year. According to the "Shenyijing", in ancient times, people would light bonfires at night when they passed through the mountains to cook and keep warm, and to prevent attacks from wild beasts. However, there is an animal in the mountains that is not afraid of humans or fire. It is the Nian beast, and it often attacks humans and animals when people are not prepared. But it is most afraid of noise, so people use the explosion of burning bamboo to scare it away. Later, when gunpowder was invented, people loaded gunpowder into bamboo tubes to make firecrackers. Later, they used paper tubes, also called firecrackers or cannonballs, to drive away the Nian beast. Nowadays we don’t believe in the Nian monster, but in order to inherit Chinese traditional culture, we still set off firecrackers during the Chinese New Year.

6. These records fully demonstrate that "firecrackers" originated in the Spring and Autumn Period, were popular in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and were more prosperous in the Song Dynasty than in the Tang Dynasty. By the Song Dynasty, firecrackers had become popular among the people.
