What does Guyu mean?

Grain Rain is the sixth solar term among the 24 solar terms and the last solar term of the Spring Festival. Grain Rain occurs when the sun reaches 30° of the ecliptic longitude from April 19th to 21st every year. It comes from the ancient saying that "rain brings forth hundreds of grains". The time of Grain Rain this year is: April 20, 2017, 05:26:58, the 24th day of the third month (small month) in the lunar calendar of 2017.

Agroclimatic significance

Guyu, as the name suggests, means rain after sowing grain. After Grain Rain, rainfall increases, duckweed begins to grow, and then the cuckoo begins to remind people to sow seeds. In other words, this is the best time to sow seeds, transplant seedlings, and plant melons and beans. The ancient saying "rain brings forth all kinds of grains" reflects the modern agricultural climate significance of "Gu Yu".

1. "Tongwei·Xiaojing Yuanshenqi" says: "Fifteen days after Qingming, the Big Dipper points to Chen, which is Grain Rain. It is in the middle of March. It means that the rain brings forth all kinds of grains, and the weather is clean and bright."
2. During the Grain Rain season, there is abundant rainfall in the south, and the first heavy rain of the year usually occurs during this period.
3. "Qunfangpu" says: "Guyu, the grain grows because of the rain." Before and after Guyu, the weather is warmer and the rainfall increases, which is conducive to the sowing and growth of spring crops.
