Introduction of Yu Meiren

1. Poppy is an annual herb belonging to the Poppy family. When the poppy flower is not in bloom, the egg-shaped buds are covered with two green sepals with white edges, hanging down on the slender and upright pedicels, which look very much like a girl with her head down in thought. When the buds of the poppy bloom and the sepals fall off, the poppy stands out: its bent body stands up, and the four thin petals on the upward flower are as thin as satin and as smooth as silk. The light corolla is like red clouds and colorful silk, and it seems to sway even in the wind, and it seems to fly when the wind blows. The originally bent and weak branches now straighten up and support the flowers. It is hard to imagine that such a delicate and simple poppy can bloom such rich and gorgeous flowers.

2. Poppy is native to Europe and is commonly cultivated in various parts of China as an ornamental plant. The flowers and the whole plant are used as medicine, containing a variety of bioalkaloids, which have antitussive, antidiarrheal, analgesic and sedative effects; the seeds contain more than 40% oil.

3. The difference between poppy and corn poppy: the whole plant of poppy is covered with hair and the fruit is small; while the plant body of poppy is smooth and hairless and the fruit is larger. But its color and shape are similar to those of the drug poppy, so it is also known as ornamental "poppy" in the flower world.

The Story of Poppy

According to legend, at the end of the Qin Dynasty, Chu and Han were fighting each other, and the Overlord of Western Chu, Xiang Yu, was defeated and besieged by the Han army at Gaixia. Xiang Yu knew that it was difficult to break out of the encirclement, so he drank with his favorite concubine Yu Ji at night. Suddenly I heard the sound of Chu songs everywhere, and I couldn't help but sing an impassioned and sad song: My strength can pull up mountains and my spirit can conquer the world, but the time is not right and my horse cannot move. What can I do if Zhui won't move away? What can I do to Yu Xi, Yu Xi? Yu Ji also felt that the game was hopeless. She sang "The Song of Gaixia" with tears in her eyes and danced. The song goes: "The Han soldiers have occupied the land. The sound of Chu songs can be heard everywhere. The king has lost his spirit. What is the point of my living as a humble concubine?" After the song, she drew the sword from Xiang Yu's waist, put it across his neck. Immediately, blood gushed out and he died. This is one of the most poignant and tragic love stories of the Warring States Period - "Farewell My Concubine", which has been passed down for thousands of years and has always made people sigh.

Later, a kind of grass grew on Yu Ji's tomb. It was shaped like cockscomb, with opposite leaves, soft stems and long leaves. It moved without wind, like a beautiful woman dancing, charming and lovely. According to folklore, this grass was transformed from Concubine Yu's sincerity, so people called it "Yu Meiren Grass" and its flower "Yu Meiren". It is said that the bright red color of the poppy flowers was dyed from Concubine Yu's blood. It seems that Yu Ji still exists after her death. She has turned into poppy, which blooms every year in late spring and early summer. Even though she has turned into grass and wood, she is still persistent, still loyal and steadfast to the Overlord, and still smiles and dances for him all year round like before.

It is reported that the couplet in a seven-character quatrain written by the Qing Dynasty poet Xu about Concubine Yu, "The green blood turns into grass on the river, and the flowers bloom are redder than the cuckoo", is a description based on the legend.
